چکیده

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the associations between physical diseases and prevalent / incident anxiety in a community dwelling older population aged 65 years or over. Methods: 1204 people aged 65 years or over evaluated at baseline, and 909 (75.4%) were followed two years later. Anxiety was identified at both evaluation points using the questions from the community version of the Geriatric Mental State Schedule together with diagnostic algorithm, the Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy. Reported physical diseases covering 11 common and generally chronic health problems were ascertained. Covariates included were age, gender, education, living area, accommodation status, past occupation, current occupation and marital status. Results: In multivariate analyses, prevalent anxiety was independently associated with 9 of 11 physical diseases (arthritis or rheumatism, eyesight problems, hearing difficulty, persistent cough, asthma, hypertension, heart disease, gastrointestinal problems, and unilateral paralysis or weakness); and incident anxiety was independently associated with 2 physical diseases (arthritis or rheumatism and heart disease). Both prevalent and incident anxiety were significantly associated with increased number of physical diseases. Conclusion: Certain physical diseases were identified as risk and/or precipitating factors for anxiety in elders. Appropriate intervention and treatment of physical diseases might mitigate the morbidity of anxiety in late-life.

Role of dopaminergic receptors in acute joint inflammation in the rabbits

The dopaminergic system has different effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems. Since both vascular injuries and activation of the immune system are involved in joint inflammation, in the present study the role of dopaminergic receptors in knee joint inflammation was studied. Evans blue (75 µ g/kg) was used in order to observe changes in permeability which occurred during the process ...

Long Acting Propranolol and HSP-70 Rich Tumor Lysate Reduce Tumor Growth and Enhance Immune Response against Fibrosarcoma in Balb/c Mice

Background: Noradrenaline (NA), the principal neurotransmitter released from sympathetic nerve terminals, influences T-cell maturation, not only directly in developing T cells, but also indirectly, by acting on the thymic nonlymphoid cells. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the anti-proliferative, anti-migratory, antiangiogenic and cytotoxic properties of propranolol, β-AR blocker,...

Abstract Background: In the serum of healthy people, IgG4 has lowest concentration among the different sub-classes of IgG. Elevation of serum IgG4 in response to chronic antigenic stimulation and inflammation has been reported. Inflammation, histopathologic lesions and systemic organ involvement have been reported in the IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). In this article we review IgG4 unique f...

Tehranolide Could Shift the Immune Response towards Th1 and Modulate the Intra-Tumor Infiltrated T Regulatory Cells

Background: Artemisia diffusa contains a new type of sesquiterpene lactone with an endoperoxide group (Tehranolide). Objective: Due to the existing similarity between the structures of Tehranolide and Artemisinin, it was hypothesized that Tehranolide would have similar effects as Artemisinin. In this study, the immunotherapeutic effec-tiveness of Tehranolide was investigated by direct intra-tum...

Involvement of Opioidergic and Sertoninergic systems in anti-nociceptive effect of Tanacetum parthenium

Introduction: Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) (T.p.) is widely used in folk medicine to treat many diseases. We reported the analgesic effect of T.p. flower and leaf previously. Present study is designed to find the mechanism underlying the anti-nociceptive effect of the aqueous extract of T.p. flower. Method: Based on our previous study, the dose 50 mg/kg i.p. of the T.p. aqueous extract had...
